The Institute for Laboratory and Transfusion Medicine (ILTM) is integrated into the Heart and Diabetes Center NRW (HDZ NRW) in Bad Oeynhausen, a university hospital of the Ruhr University Bochum.

As the largest university institute of its kind in Germany, it offers a comprehensive range of laboratory and transfusion medicine services as well as molecular biological procedures for the detection of infectious agents and genetic diagnostics with a focus on cardiogenetics. The ILTM is also the reference institute of the German Medical Association for carrying out proficiency tests. The ILTM is available around the clock to the clinics at the site and to external healthcare providers. The University Blood Transfusion Service OWL, a pharmaceutical company that manufactures blood products for the HDZ NRW and external customers, is integrated into the Transfusion Medicine department.

Another important objective of the university institute is research and teaching. Clinical traineeships in laboratory medicine are possible at the ILTM. The institute is authorized for further training as a clinical chemist and for further training as a specialist in laboratory medicine. Furthermore, the Institute has a teaching assignment at the Faculty of Chemistry at Bielefeld University. Students specializing in biochemistry can complete their final theses at the ILTM, as well as a scientific doctorate.
