Description

The Institute provides the University Medical Center Mainz with a broad spectrum of laboratory analysis. The focus is on hemostaseology, including comprehensive genetic testing for complex diseases, endocrinology, immunology, therapeutic drug monitoring, all cerebrospinal fluid diagnostics and molecular diagnostics of genetic diseases, such as endocrine tumor syndromes. In addition, the institute carries out the entire diagnosis of viral hepatitis and HIV using quantitative PCR.

In terms of teaching, the institute offers all the content of the subject for students of medicine and dentistry as well as various optional courses. Since 2019, the PJ elective in laboratory medicine can be taken at the institute, for which a corresponding curriculum has been developed. The institute is also involved in teaching on the Master’s degree course in biomedicine and pharmacy. The Institute is authorized to provide further training for clinical chemists and specialists in laboratory medicine.

Scientifically, the Institute is mainly concerned with cardiovascular topics. It focuses on the pathogenesis of thromboembolic diseases such as antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) as well as the pathogenesis and epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases. The Institute is a founding member and central institution of the Center for Thrombosis and Haemostasis (CTH) at the University Medical Center, which was established in 2010.
